Why does United States experience earthquakes?
Seismicity in the US is governed by multiple tectonic regimes. The western margin features the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the Pacific Northwest (where the Juan de Fuca Plate dives beneath North America), the 1,200-kilometer San Andreas transform fault in California, and active crustal extension across the Basin and Range province. Alaska is shaped by rapid subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Aleutian Arc, while Hawaii experiences volcanically driven seismicity over a mantle hotspot.
