Terms of Service

Last Updated ·

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of EarthquakeToday.live ("Earthquake Today," "we," "our," or "the Service"). By browsing our live earthquake today tracker, viewing interactive seismic maps, or querying today's earthquake data feeds, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to be legally bound by these Terms.

If you do not agree to these Terms in full, you must refrain from accessing or utilizing our platform and associated real-time feeds.

1. Critical Emergency Disclaimer & Non-Affiliation

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Earthquake Today is an independent, non-governmental informational platform designed for public education, scientific observation, and real-time situational awareness. We are not an official emergency dispatch service, government agency, or authoritative civil protection authority.

During an ongoing earthquake, tsunami warning, volcanic unrest, or natural disaster:

  • Never rely exclusively on this website for immediate life-safety or evacuation decisions.
  • Always follow instructions broadcast by your local emergency management agencies, national civil defense authorities, and emergency broadcast systems (e.g., FEMA, JMA, AFAD, BMKG).
  • Practice standard survival protocols: Drop, Cover, and Hold On during active ground shaking.
  • If located in a low-lying coastal zone following a strong or prolonged tremor, immediately move to higher ground inland without waiting for sirens or digital updates.

2. Data Sourcing and Scientific Accuracy

All seismic data presented on Earthquake Today is derived directly from automated, real-time GeoJSON feeds published by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program. We update our feeds every 60 seconds to reflect newly detected seismic events.

You acknowledge that preliminary earthquake parameters (including focal depth, epicenter coordinates, and preliminary magnitude) are computed automatically by computer algorithms within seconds of initial seismic wave arrivals. These preliminary figures are frequently revised, updated, or re-calibrated by human seismologists as secondary wave data from global seismograph networks becomes available. Earthquake Today disclaims liability for automated data revisions, network latency, or sensor calibration adjustments issued by official sources.

3. Permitted Use and Acceptable Conduct

Earthquake Today grants you a personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access our platform for educational, research, and non-commercial personal awareness. In utilizing the Service, you agree not to:

  • Engage in aggressive automated scraping, bulk data harvesting, or continuous sub-second polling that impairs server availability or bandwidth for other visitors.
  • Bypass, reverse-engineer, or attempt to circumvent security controls, caching systems, or rate-limiting safeguards.
  • Misrepresent information obtained from Earthquake Today as an official government decree, mandatory evacuation order, or guaranteed geological prediction.
  • Use the Service in any manner that violates applicable municipal, national, or international laws and regulations.

4. Community "I Felt It" Reporting Rules

Our platform includes an interactive "I Felt It" feature that allows visitors to submit anonymous reports indicating that they personally experienced tremor shaking for a specific cataloged event.

By utilizing this feature, you agree to submit reports in good faith, reflecting authentic physical sensations of ground movement. You agree not to manipulate counters through script automation, bots, or fraudulent reporting. We reserve the right to reset or filter anomalous reporting bursts to maintain data integrity.

5. Intellectual Property and Open Data

The proprietary layout, original analytical commentary, design architecture, graphics, interface components, and codebase of Earthquake Today are protected by copyright, trademark, and intellectual property laws.

Raw earthquake observations, magnitudes, and coordinates produced by the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program reside in the public domain under United States federal guidelines. You are free to access and study raw scientific records directly from USGS repositories.

6. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE, INCLUDING ALL REAL-TIME MAPS, TABLES, ESTIMATED MAGNITUDES, DEPTHS, AND HISTORICAL ARTICLES, IS PROVIDED STRICTLY ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED.

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMISSIBLE BY LAW, EARTHQUAKE TODAY DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, DATA ACCURACY, UNINTERRUPTED AVAILABILITY, OR FREEDOM FROM TRANSMISSION ERRORS, LATENCY, OR SYSTEM DEFECTS.

8. Modifications to the Service and Terms

We reserve the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any aspect of the Service, including data refresh intervals, mapping layers, or regional coverage, at any time without prior notice. We may update these Terms periodically to reflect operational, legal, or regulatory modifications. The "Last Updated" legend at the top indicates the date of the latest revisions.
