Why does Turkey experience earthquakes?
The seismotectonics of Turkey are dominated by the westward tectonic escape of the Anatolian Microplate. As the Arabian Plate moves northward and crashes into the massive Eurasian Plate, the Anatolian Plate is squeezed westward into the Aegean Sea like a melon seed between two fingers. This lateral extrusion is accommodated by two premier active continental strike-slip fault systems: the 1,500-kilometer North Anatolian Fault (which closely resembles California's San Andreas Fault and runs near Istanbul) and the 700-kilometer East Anatolian Fault in southeastern Turkey.
