Taiwan sits directly at the active collision suture where the Luzon volcanic arc (riding the Philippine Sea Plate) crashes northwestward into the Eurasian continental margin at approximately 8 centimeters per year. This creates a rare arc-continent collision that pushes the Central Mountain Range upward by several millimeters annually. In eastern Taiwan, the Longitudinal Valley Fault marks the actual plate boundary suture.
