Why does Russia experience earthquakes?
Seismicity in eastern Russia is dominated by the subduction of the Pacific Plate diving westward beneath the Okhotsk and North American plates along the 2,000-kilometer Kuril-Kamchatka Trench at 8 to 9 centimeters per year. This ultra-fast subduction zone has produced historic megathrust ruptures exceeding magnitude 8.5, as well as destructive regional tsunamis. Further west, transpressional shear faulting along Sakhalin Island and active continental rifting in southern Siberia (around Lake Baikal) generate strong intraplate earthquakes.
