The rapid subduction of the Solomon Sea Plate beneath New Britain along the New Britain Trench, combined with active seafloor spreading in the Woodlark Basin and collision in the New Guinea Highlands, produces severe shallow crustal faulting and intense offshore megathrust quakes.
