Why does Iran experience earthquakes?
Iran's active tectonics are governed by the relentless northward drift of the Arabian Plate colliding into the Eurasian continental plate at 20 to 25 millimeters per year. This continental collision compresses the Iranian plateau from the south, forcing the crust to crumple and thicken into the Zagros Fold-and-Thrust Belt in the southwest and the Alborz Mountains (flanking Tehran) in the north. Because the central plateau is surrounded by rigid crustal blocks, tectonic strain escapes along major strike-slip faults like the North Tabriz Fault, the Bam Fault, and the Dasht-e Bayaz Fault.
