Why does India experience earthquakes?

India's seismicity is dominated by the colossal continental collision of the Indian Plate smashing northward into the Eurasian Plate at approximately 4 to 5 centimeters per year. Over millions of years, this ongoing collision has thrust the Himalayas upward to the highest elevations on Earth. The 2,500-kilometer Himalayan arc stores enormous tectonic strain along the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT), generating repeated M7.5 to M8.5 catastrophic earthquakes. Further south, intraplate stresses within the Indian subcontinent occasionally rupture ancient rift faults, producing devastating intraplate events like Killari (Latur) and Bhuj.
