Alaska is by far the most seismically active region in North America, experiencing more earthquakes than all other 49 US states combined. On average, Alaska records an earthquake every 10 minutes, generating 11% of the world's total seismic energy and three of the top ten largest earthquakes in recorded human history.
Why does Alaska experience earthquakes?
Alaska's extreme seismicity is driven by the Pacific Plate subducting northwestward beneath the North American Plate along the 4,000-kilometer Aleutian Trench at a rate of 5 to 7 centimeters per year. This megathrust interface produces gigantic subduction earthquakes and powerful tsunamis that can travel across the entire Pacific Basin. Inland, the collision of the Yakutat microplate in south-central Alaska drives massive crustal deformation, uplifting mountain ranges and generating powerful shallow strike-slip and thrust earthquakes like the Denali Fault event.

On March 27, 1964, Prince William Sound was struck by a magnitude 9.2 megathrust earthquake — the second-largest earthquake ever recorded on Earth — which ruptured for over four minutes and unleashed destructive tsunamis across the Pacific.
Alaska lies directly over the Aleutian Megathrust subduction zone, where the Pacific Plate moves northwestward and plunges beneath the North American Plate at up to 6.5 cm per year, driving continuous seismic and volcanic activity.
Located at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the Alaska Earthquake Center monitors and analyzes more than 40,000 seismic events in the state each year in coordination with the USGS and the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) in Palmer.
